Final Work

Reflection

What went well?

I was randomly assigned a character to design, this was a fun new experience that gave me an opportunity to work on something I may not typically do. I was assigned the task of making an astronaut in the 1960s or the arms race era, this was good as I had lots of experience working with sci-fi characters from my previous work and own interests meaning that I had a lot of ideas coming into the project and was very confident when designing the astronaut suit in particular

I think my drawings went very well during the project and I was able to effectively portray my character's personality and background through his design accredited to the research I had conducted. The poses and expressions I think went very well as they did a very good job showcasing the character's arrogant but goofy personality. I also think time management wise i was able to stay organised and complete everything I needed to within a reasonable time that met my deadlines.

what went wrong?

Although I was mostly happy with my character's design I think I wasn't able to portray his clumsy quality as much in his design at least not as much as other traits. The turnaround drawings of my character design I think didn't go as planned and I think I didn't retain my character design from each angle, with it being slightly different in each sketch. I also think I did not conduct enough research on the historical context of my character and that my character may not be fitting of a 1960s astronaut or taken the idea of the arms race into much consideration, only doing this by making him look very American.

what could be done better?

I think I could add some more details to showcase his clumsiness for example maybe adding bruises, scuff marks or holes to show that he isn't very careful and gets into accidents often. Additionally, I think my turnaround designs can be refined by focusing more on his proportions and ensuring they remain consistent for each angle maybe modelling him could allow me to do this well or using a figurine or more references to do this. Furthermore, I think I could conduct further research on the historical contexts and make my character design more accurate whilst still retaining his design, for example looking at 1960s astronaut suits and adding details from that or adding references to the arms race or something along those lines to make my character feel more real.
